Sindiwe Magona is one of South Africa’s most beloved and versatile storytellers and writers.

Her writing is both deep and accessible and offers penetrating insight into the complex web of challenges that are faced by the people of South Africa. She writes in many genres including fiction, drama, poetry, autobiography and biography. Most recently she has turned her talents to children’s literature, with a focus on indigenous languages.

Amazwi is custodian of Dr Magona’s personal archive, as well as that of her first publisher, David Phillip, and also holds material from Kwela Books, who published her later work. The exhibition “Sindiwe Magona: A Conscience for the Nation” draws on these collections as well as Magona’s published works and interviews to present a carefully curated overview of her life and work. The exhibition includes drafts of such iconic works as To My Children’s Children and Mother to Mother, as well as letters between Magona and Marie Phillip, who was her editor at David Phillip.
